The Cambodia - Thailand Conflict and Its Policy Implications for Vietnam

Abstract

The Cambodia-Thailand border conflict represents the cumulative outcome of historical and legal issues rooted in the colonial legacy, including discrepancies in cartographic techniques and disputes over sovereignty linked to sites of national symbolic significance. Tensions have been further exacerbated by the rise of ultra nationalism and fractures within personal relationships among ruling political families. The consequences of the conflict extend beyond humanitarian crises and severe economic losses for both countries; they also pose risks to regional stability within ASEAN and create opportunities for external powers to intervene in the region. For Vietnam, this case offers important policy lessons. These include the necessity of consistently upholding sovereignty through international law, strengthening early warning and strategic forecasting capacities, and firmly prioritising national interests in order to maintain peaceful and friendly borders, while avoiding strategic vulnerability or external manipulation.
