The 1976 General Election: The Strength of National Unity through the Lens of Revolutionary Press

The general election held on 25 April 1976 was not only a milestone in completing national
reunification at the state level, but also constituted a significant “socio-political proof” that
directly affirmed the legitimacy of the unified Vietnamese state. Through the lens of the
revolutionary press, the images, data, and flows of information surrounding the election vividly
reflected the broad-based political participation of the population. This article highlights the
significance of the event in establishing popular sovereignty and laying the legal foundations
for a unified Vietnam’s transition towards socialism. At the same time, it serves as empirical
evidence of the democratic nature of the political system, contributing to countering distorted
or misleading narratives regarding democracy and people’s rights in Vietnam.
