Abstract

After having staged a coup d’état Head of State Norodom Sihanouk, Lon Nol aggressively built and developed the Khmer National Armed Forces (French: Forces Armées Nationales Khmères - FANK) following the US model with full and relatively modernly equipped and branches of service. During 5 years of existence (1970 - 1975), with direct aid and under the direction of the US, FANK coordinated with the Saigon army to open many military operations to destroy the Armed Forces of the Liberation of Cambodia and the south Vietnam liberation Army. Nevertheless, the strategic goals of the US and the Lon Nol government have completely failed. The article contributes to understanding the organizational structure, operation process and to explaining more reasons why the army of the Lon Nol government quickly collapsed and completely disbanded in early 1975
